Baron Basuning
Collective ExhibitionMarch 2 – March 22, 2013
Press Release
Indonesian artist Baron Basuning was a journalist and activist before he devoted himself to painting, and his exquisite abstract compositions could be explained as reactions to his previous careers’ devotion to facts and data. Now, in his Color Field-like acrylic compositions, he combines modes of application like washing, scratching, scraping and pouring to create beautiful and dynamic layers of tones and textures. These combinations of shifting and subtly contrasting hues coalesce into geometric forms whose edges bleed and blur, creating wonderful tensions between different techniques, pigments and surfaces.Beneath their variety of colors and type of paint treatment, Basuning’s compositions are structured by the surprisingly classical contrasts between the dark and light areas of each canvas. Some suggest soft, snow-draped plains marked by ruptures of hard-edged reds and blues, while others substitute saturated browns, oranges and burgundies for popping primary hues. This unpredictable variety of palette allows Basuning to create some pieces that hone in on extreme tonal contrast, while others shift from light to dark more gradually, foregrounding their lush textures.
